Sixty Four FAB Riderzz took up the challenge in this years Cycle Live Nottingham Event,
24 June 2018, on a blisteringly hot day. Comprising differing abilities, ages (6 - 70+),
and target distances (25 – 125 miles) all were unified by a single cause.
To raise £5000 sponsorship for Friends & Bredrin to increase awareness about prostate cancer,
to maintain a Mens Support Group, and to purchase medical equipment for local hospitals.
FAB Riderzz ranged from cycle teams including Nottingham Active Bike Club (ABC) and Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) members to lesser experienced independent cyclists. It was great to welcome new participants to the FAB Family, as well as to reacquaint with friends from last year.
Lead for FAB Riderzz, Mr Roydon Allen (aka ‘Lycra Man’), symbolised the spirit and determination of FAB Riderzz in remarkably cycling 25 miles under testing conditions despite currently receiving chemotherapy himself for prostate cancer. Another FAB Mens Group member, Peter Harrison, covered the same distance even though he’s recovering from surgery for prostate cancer. Roydon summed up his own experience: ‘The ride was enjoyably difficult. As promised I supported the last FAB Rider in our group. Despite being unfamiliar with her heavy new bike, we walked up some of the hills and Mary Harrison never gave up, such was her determination to stay the course’. Four and a half hours later, Mary and Roydon were loudly applauded as they crossed the finish line; bearing big proud smiles, the pain evaporated!
FAB Co-founder and FAB Rider, Mr Wayne Marston, had his own challenge during his 75 mile ride. ‘I found it a physical and mental challenge that pushed me to places where my body had not previously ventured’. Even though he was involved in a rare collision sustaining a shoulder injury he completed the distance and remarked that it was an excellent day, one that he’ll never forget.
FAB Riderzz were warmly welcomed to a post-ride celebration event, sponsored by the GMB Union, at the Nottingham Rowing Boat Club to receive certificates presented by Mr Tyehimba Nosakhere. FAB gratefully thanks all FAB Riderzz for their time and valiant efforts, to the many volunteers who cooked the delicious food, and to the many supporters who sponsored our Riderzz.
